HYDERABAD, May 24 A meeting to evaluate pre-monsoon and flood arrangements was held under the chairmanship of Administrator, Hyderabad district, Aftab Ahmed Khatri.

Plans were on the anvil to establish 39 emergency relief centres which would provide food, besides shelter to flood-affectees, Khatri said adding that relief camps would be activated the moment a situation arose.

Essential commodities including clothes, blankets and food stuff would be distributed under the supervision of the EDOs revenue and the CDD to flood effectees, he said.

The relief department will initially provide bags of ration containing flour, rice, sugar, tea packets, dry milk and pulses till people were settled, he said while the Health Department would make arrangements for providing medical aid in hospitals, rural health units and basic health units as well as in the relief camps, while mobile teams would visit remote, low-laying areas of the district during emergency.

Emergency centres have been established in the offices of DCO, EDO revenue, DG HDA and MD WASA which would work round the clock whereas the district government's Help Line '1334' would remain open round the clock.

Managing Director, Wasa, Mohammad Shafique Arain informed the meeting that all 78 pumping stations were in running condition and 25 more would be established in rain emergency, if needed. The TMAs have their separate pumping stations. Work for de-silting of nullahs was in progress, he added.

The Administrator directed the officers of Irrigation Department to ensure repair of vulnerable points of protective bunds and ensure that suitable material was available at the site to meet breach eventuality.

He told Wasa to maintain level of water in canals so that rain water could flow out easily.

Hesco authorities were also directed to ensure regular power supply to pumping stations and adopt proper measures for the flow of rain and flood waters in and around grid stations.

Representative of Pakistan Army, taluka administrators and other concerned officers assured the Administrator of taking foolproof measures in case of rain emergencies.

DG HDA also briefed the meeting regarding plantation work being carried out.
