ISLAMABAD Emerging squash player Nasir Iqbal created an upset when he defeated experienced Waqar Mehboob in the main round of the eighth Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Open Squash Championship at the Mushaf Squash Complex here on Tuesday.

“I entered the court with an aim to win the match,” an excited Nasir told Dawn.

Despite having a better exposure, Waqar Mehboob from the ZTBL, who is a leading national player, could not make an impact against the underdog, Nasir from the PAF, during the 48-minute fixture.

Nasir lost the first game 6-11, however, made a good comeback, winning the next three games 11-8, 11-8, 11-8.

Meanwhile, all the top ranking national players cleared the main round matches of the championship.

In another match, Aamir Atlas Khan of the Wapda trounced Farhan Zaman of the NWFP 11-5, 11-6, 11-6.

Shoaib Hassan of Punjab overcame Safeerullah of the Pakistan Air Force 11-8, 11-8, 11-8.

In the girls' event, Riffat Khan of Punjab trounced Anosha Asim of the same province 11-1, 11-3, 11-9.

Wapda's Maria Toor overcame Amna Latif of Punjab 11-0, 11-3, 11-1 in the one-sided encounter.

Meanwhile, Zoya Khaild, Saima Shoukat, Aliya Sarfraz, Rushna Mehboob, Amna Mehboob and Muqaddas Ashraf cruised into the next round of the championship.

Pakistan Squash Federation's Senior Vice-President AVM Asim Suleman watched the matches of the main round.
