LAHORE, Aug 17: The Punjab government is considering a proposal to introduce computerized registration numbers for vehicles, chief secretary Hafeez Akhtar Randhawa said here on Saturday.

He was presiding over a meeting also attended by principal secretary to governor and secretaries for Local Government, Transport, Excise and Taxation, Information Technology Departments and the inspector general police.

The meeting was told that the registration authority will provide tamper-proof computerized number plates. The official vehicles will be allocated a special series.

The meeting proposed that the system of issuance of fitness certificates to commercial vehicles should be improved. It was proposed that fitness certificates should be issued to new vehicles for three years and later renewed annually.
