PWD humble ADBP to reach semis

KARACHI, Aug 12: The second Almas Baig Masters Cup Table Tennis Championship got off to a sensational start when Pak PWD knocked out Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan (ADBP) 3-0 to reach the semifinal of men’s team event at Islamia Club Indoor Gymnasium Monday.

Pak PWD comprising Khalid, Nadir Sohail and Zulfiqar Ahmed produced superb performances to send fancied ADBP crashing out of the event.

Khalid gave PWD lead by winning the opening game but Nadir Sohail faced a strong challenge from veteran Bilal Yaseen before carving out 3-2 victory. In the decider Zulfiqar Ali outclassed Rashid Baig in straight sets.

The National men’s team champion Allied Bank Limited (ABL) looked in good nick while registering 3-0 win over Karachi.

ABL, Habib Bank, Wapda were the other teams to reach the men’s team event last four stage. ABL and HBL stormed in ladies team event final after easy victories.

Reigning National singles Champion Asim Qureshi and former champion Farjad Saif notched-up straight games victory, Kashif Razzak dropped a games before overcoming Khawaja Kashif.

Asim Qureshi bt Mukhtar Ahmed by 11-4, 11-6, 11-7, Kashif Razzak bt Khawja Kashif 1-8, 11-7, 7-11,12-10, Farjad Saif bt Ayaz leghari 11-3, 11-6, 11-3 HBL bt Lahore by 3-0.
