KARACHI, Nov 6: Three people, including a councillor and a policeman, were killed when unidentified motorcyclists opened fire at a union council office in North Karachi on Tuesday night.

According to the police and eyewitnesses, a meeting was under way at the union council office in Sector 11-E, near UP Mor in North Karachi to solve a dispute between two groups of people when some unidentified men riding on a motorcycle opened indiscriminate fire with automatic weapons.

The firing resulted in the death of police constable Dewan Pervez who was standing outside the union council office on guard duty. His colleague head constable Taufeeq Ali also suffered serious bullet wounds.

As a result of the firing, general councillor Ishaque alias Nannah and a citizen Abdul

Aziz also suffered fatal bullet wounds and died on the spot. Another citizen Mohammad Yasin and a minority councillor Ilyas Masih were wounded in the incident.

The dead and wounded were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The condition of the head constable was stated to be serious.

A senior police official said the incident appeared to be a terrorist act but it could also be the outcome of political or personal rivalry as the area councillors were holding a meeting as arbitrator to solve a dispute.
