SHEIKHUPURA, Aug 8: An under-trial accused in police custody was shot dead by his three rivals while one of the attackers was also killed when the police returned firing in front of a court here on Thursday.

Reports said Khalil, resident of Kaloki village, was detained in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail on the charge of committing some heinous crimes. On Thursday, he was being brought to a court in Sheikhupura in a murder case when his rivals, Zahid and his two accomplices, opened fire on Khalil. He died instantly.

Police Constable Liaquat, who was escorting the accused, returned firing and injured Zahid. The police arrested Zahid and took him to the District Headquarters Hospital where he died. His accomplices fled.

Earlier, Zahid told newsmen at the hospital that Khalil had killed his father Younis alias Ghadi sometime back. He said he had killed Khalil in revenge.

Heavy police contingent reached there and cordoned off the area. The police high-ups have constituted special teams to track down the absconding culprits.

DIES: An under-trial prisoner died mysteriously at a local jail on Thursday.

Reports said Fazal-i-Haq was detained on the charge of killing his daughter in Nankana Sahib sometime back. He died at the jail on Thursday.

He was taken to the DHQ Hospital’s emergency ward where Dr Afzal pronounced him dead.

The heirs have demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident.
