MANCHESTER, July 30: Amateur boxing’s governing body has suspended a judge and a referee at the Commonwealth Games because of poor performances, organisers said Tuesday.

Judge David Agong of Uganda has been suspended indefinitely for making what Amateur International Boxing Federation (AIBA) president Anwar Chowdhry described as “political decisions” during a light-welterweight fight.

The bout concerned was between Kevin Anderson of Scotland and Pakistan’s Asghar Ali Shah Saturday which was won 29-18 by the Scottish boxer, organisers said in a statement.

“Referee Stephen Kofi Antwi of Ghana was given a two-day suspension for poor performances but is still allowed to officiate as a judge at the Games,” the statement said.

The judging of boxing has been controversial at major events before, notably at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

“We have a spy camera which means we can see every blow and respond to how the judge responds,” Chowdhry said.

“In the past, boxing has been at risk as an Olympic sport because of problems we have with judging and we need to ensure that the right decisions are given.”—Reuters
