Farmers demand share of water

SANGHAR, July 28: The farmers of the Dilshad Shakh have demanded their due share of water and declaration of schedule of the rotation programme by the irrigation department.

The president, Sindh Chamber of Agriculture, Khair Mohammed Narejo, Mohammed Farooq Baloch, Sadiq Hussain Mari, Saifullah Narejo, and Zafar Rajput among others said that more than 5,000 acres of land had been ruined due to the shortage of water in Dilshad Shakh of Mithrao division.

In the tail of this canal the tillers have started migration as their cattle were dying due to the non-availability of water.

The president of the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture said that their canal was closed on December 15, 2001, and the water was released in the first week of March for 14 days only.

He said that the irrigation officials release water only for 15 days in a month which deprives many farmers of their turn of irrigation water which is only once a week.

He disclosed that thousands of acres of agriculture lands have become barren due to the non-availability of water.

The farmers alleged that the executive engineer, Mithrao division, had told them that he had been posted there by the influential people and he would oblige them first.

They demanded that if there was any rotation programme then it must be announced in advance. They also demanded that water be provided in the Dilshad Shakh according to its due share.
