ISLAMABAD, Oct 1: Chinese President Jiang Zemin telephoned President Pervez Musharraf on Sunday to reaffirm China’s full support to Pakistan in the aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks in the United States.

China fully supported the decisions taken by the Government of Pakistan to safeguard the country’s national interests, said a statement of the Foreign Office issued here on Monday.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the current situation in the region, it said.

Meanwhile, Ambassador of China to Pakistan Lt Shulin said the Chinese government and people fully understand the delicate situation it is faced with.

In his speech on Pakistan Television and Radio Pakistan on the occasion of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China here on Monday, he said the government and people of China respected and supported the position taken and the decision made by the Pakistan government and the people in line with its supreme national interests.

“We are confident that Pakistan can successfully overcome any difficulty through strengthening its national unity, solidarity and social stability,” he said.

The Chinese Ambassador said Pakistan could count that the Chinese government and people were always “your trust-worthy friends whenever the weather is good or bad.”

China and Pakistan, he said, were close neighbouring countries linked with common rivers and mountains.

The friendship between the two peoples was of long-standing and had become even stronger as time went by.

“We have always been supporting each other and maintaining a close coordination in international affairs,” the Ambassador said.—APP
