MANCHESTER, July 25: Carla Khan, grand-daughter of squash legend Azam Khan, has been denied her chance to become part of the first Pakistani women’s squad to participate in a Commonwealth Games.

The British-born and -raised 20-year-old had her hopes dashed two days after winning an appeal to be allowed to represent the land of her ancestors.

“I can’t say what triggered a counter appeal but the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has changed its mind,” said Air Marshall Saeed Hussein, leader of the Pakistan squad.

“But CGF rules state that an athlete must have lived in his or her country for two of the last three years.

“Somebody must have given the CGF a document because Carla has competed in the British national championships.”

Carla has dual nationality because her father Wasil, who is Azam Khan’s son, married an English woman, Jacqueline, and settled in Britain to establish a fine foods business.—APP
