HYDERABAD, July 19: Mohsin Imam, the junior defence counsel of a convict in the Daniel Pearl kidnapping and murder case, met his client, Ahmed Omer Saeed Sheikh, inside the central jail to take his signature on the power of attorney in connection with his appeal against the death sentence.

The appeal has been filed in Karachi, Mr Imam told this correspondent.

He arrived at 9.30am and left at 10.30am.

Saeed Ahmed Sheikh, father of Omer Sheikh, also accompanied the lawyer but he was not allowed to meet his son by the jail administration officials on the ground that meeting a condemned prisoner was only allowed once a week.

The Anti-Terrorism Court judge, Syed Ali Ashraf Shah, pronounced a verdict in the case on July 15, sentencing Omer Sheikh to death. Besides, his co-accused — Salman Saqib, Fahad Naseem, and Sheikh Adil — were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The co-accused were fined Rs500,000 each. In case of default of payment, they will have to undergo another five years in jail.

Mr Imam told this correspondent that he had discussed the contents of the appeal of Omer Sheikh and informed him that the lacunas and defects of the case would be discussed in the appeal before a division bench of the Sindh High Court.

Mr Imam said that he along with Abdul Waheed Katpar would represent Mr Sheikh but at a later stage two more counsels of Karachi would join them.
