LAHORE While Peshawar Panthers, Karachi Zebras, Rawalpindi Rams and Abbottabad Rhinos made exits from the National Twenty20 Cup after losing their second matches, Faisalabad Wolves are the first to enter semi-finals as five more matches were decided.
At the Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, Panthers, led by Younis Khan, made the surprise exist after losing their matches.
A superb batting by Faisal Athar and Azeem Ghumman helped Hyderabad Hawks to earn an eight-wicket win against the Panthers in a group 'C' match.
Chasing 149, Hawks achieved the target for the loss of two wickets in the 19th over.
Batting first, after losing the toss, Younis, however, led from the front scoring 38 as Panthers earned a total of 148 for loss of six wickets.
Fine batting by Khalid Latif and Fawad Alam and their third-wicket stand of 106 inspired Karachi Dolphins score 209 for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs against Abbottabad Rhinos at the Gaddafi Stadium.
Rhinos, in reply, were restricted to 157 for seven in 20 overs.
At the LCCA ground, fine half-centuries by openers Babar Ali and Sohaib Maqsood helped Multan Tigers beat Karachi Zebras by eight wickets in a pool 'B' match and push Zebras out of the tournament.
Chasing the target of 159, Babar hit 52-ball 58 with eight fours and one six while Sohaib made 40-ball 59 with two sixes and five fours as Multan achieved the target in 18.3 overs for the loss of two wickets.
Both Babar and Sohaib provided an excellent start of 118 runs in 13.1 overs.
Batting first, Zebras were well served by Fahad Iqbal (58, five fours, one six, 41 balls) and opener Shahzaib Hasan (56, 48 balls, six fours, two sixes) to earn an adequate total of 158 for six.
Naumanullah (35, five fours, 25 balls) was the other notable scorer. Leg-spinner Kashif Naved snared three wickets for 20 runs.
Yet another fine all-round performance by Mohammad Hafeez guided Faisalabad Wolves beat Rawalpindi Rams by 27 runs at the LCCA ground.
Another fine knock by Mohammad Hafeez (79, 11 fours, 56 balls) and Khurram Shahzad Latif (65, six fours, one six, 51 balls) enabled Wolves set a winning target of 171.
Sohail Tanvir finished with three for 24.
In reply, Rams, who had lost the o pening match to Lahore Lions, were restricted to 143 for seven with opener Naved Malik cracking 27-ball 50 with seven fours and two sixes.
Hafeez also excelled with the leather taking three wickets for 14.
On Monday night, match-winning knock by Fayyaz Ahmad helped Islamabad Leopards beat Peshawar Panthers by six wickets at the Gaddafi Stadium.
Fayyaz's knock of 46-ball 58, adorned with nine fours and one six, eclipsed the fine batting of rival captain Younis Khan (70) as Leopards banged home scoring 153 for four wickets in 17.4 overs.
Fayyaz consumed 46 balls and hit nine boundaries and one six to be declared Man-of-the-Match.
