SAO PAULO (Brazil), June 11: Brazilian soccer great Pele has been kept in hospital after suffering an allergic reaction during a routine check-up, a Sao Paulo hospital said on Tuesday.

Pele, 61, was taken into intensive care on Monday following the adverse reaction but was moved to a normal room on Tuesday at the hospital which specialises in heart conditions.

“After an X-ray examination, he suffered an allergic reaction, which is unforeseeable but can be corrected in most cases,” the hospital said in a statement.

Pele suffered the allergic reaction after drinking fluids normally taken by patients awaiting an X-ray examination.

The doctor treating Pele said Tuesday his life wasn’t in any immediate danger.

“At the moment I’m very confident about Pele’s condition. At no moment during the proceedings has he become confused,” said the doctor.

“I’m waiting for more results, doing further investigations, to get rid of this problem.”

The doctor has warned Pele that he will have to adapt some of his habits if he is to continue living a healthy life.—Reuters/AFP
