MIRPUR, June 11: A reportedly abnormal mother, under severe financial problems, threw her six young children into the Upper Jhelum Canal at Mangla on Monday, police said.

Mangla police have arrested the accused mother and are investigating into the incident.

Zahida Perveen, wife of Chaudhry Arif, of Jallo Chak, was stated to be abnormal. Following bouts of mental unrest and domestic financial problems, she took her six children to Mangla and threw them into the canal.

Only the body of her daughter, Noor Fatima, 6, could be recovered from the canal till late night.

Police, quoting the family of the accused, said the woman had been undergoing treatment for mental illness. The body was handed over to the family after postmortem, police said.—APP
