HYDERABAD, Oct 30: During the congress of Sindh Taraqqi Passand Party (STPP) held here recently, former general secretary of the party, Dr Raheem Solangi, former vice chairman and ideologue, comrade Hussain Bukhsh Thebo, and former party spokesman, Punhal Sario, have tendered their resignations from the party offices and membership over differences on party policy.

Talking to Dawn, they accused the nationalist groups of Sindh of maintaining criminal silence against rising fundamentalism which they termed negation of human dignity, knowledge and consciousness and added that it had destroyed the secular fabric of Sindhi society.

In an obvious reference to Dr Qadir Magsi, his former comrades said that those who made tall claims to sacrifice their lives for Sindh had in fact restricted themselves to issuing press statements and had fallen prey to expediencies.

They said that in the wake of rapid changes in international politics, it was the duty of all the patriotic elements to fight against fundamentalism and rise above party politics and expediencies for the sake of Sindh.

They regretted that Pakistan Oppressed Nations Movement (Ponam) had greatly disappointed Sindhi masses and its stand on the issue of Afghan refugees was against the interests of Sindh.

They said that under the circumstances, the people of Sindh were justified in asking their leaders why were they were still part of the alliance.

The nationalist activists said if the influx of the Afghan refugees cannot be stopped, the very existence of Ponam was against the interests of Sindh.

Meanwhile, at the three-day congress of the STPP Dr Qadir Magsi was re- elected as the chairman of the party.

A 20-member central committee of the party was also elected which formed electoral college for the elections of the other office bearers.

According to the election results, Haider Shahani, Ali Hassan Chandio, Dr Hameed Memon, Hoath Khan Gadhi, Ashiq Solangi, Saleh Junejo, Muzaffar Kalhoro and Ali Mohammad Lashari were elected senior vice chairman, vice chairman, general secretary, deputy general secretary, joint secretary, finance secretary, press spokesman and coordination secretary respectively.
