American diplomat wins bet

BRASILIA (Brazil), June 6: The U.S. ambassador to Brazil was able to celebrate more than a shock 3-2 World Cup victory by the United States over Portugal on Wednesday when she won two bottles of red wine from her Portuguese counterpart.

Like other diplomats based in soccer-mad Brazil, US ambassador Donna Hrinak entered into the spirit of the game by betting two bottles of Californian wine against the Portuguese ambassador’s two bottles of Portugal’s finest Dao red.

“For me, the three goals in the first half were a complete surprise,” Hrinak said during a brief handing-over ceremony by the Portuguese ambassador Antonio Franco.—Reuters
