JUI endorses MMA manifesto

LAHORE, May 5: The central advisory council (Majlis Shoora) of the JUI has endorsed the proposed constitution and manifesto of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal.

Speaking at a meeting here on Sunday, JUI amir Maulana Fazlur Rahman said Gen Pervez Musharraf, following the footsteps of Gen Zia, was thinking upon introducing non-party polls after extending his rule for five years through a so-called referendum.

Saying with the suspension of the Constitution the country had reached a blind alley, he said the May 13 summit meeting of the MMA would take far-reaching decisions for organizing politicians as well as the masses for the complete withdrawal of the army from power corridors.

Condemning raids on religious seminaries by the teams led by US armymen, he warned the rulers that they were playing with fire by allowing the US forces to conduct operations in the tribal area.

Fearing air strikes on the tribal area by the US forces on the pretext of casualties, he demanded the government to announce a clear policy on the issue.
