ISLAMABAD, April 22: The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is establishing a Margalla Conservation and Information Centre (MCIC) at Murghzar Zoo to inform children about wildlife and forests, the Fund director education, Dr Ghulam Akbar, told Dawn.

He said the Centre would be established within a couple of months at four acres provided by the Capital Development Authority (CDA).

In the Capital, he said, no such place existed where children could learn about behaviour of animals and protection of green areas and wildlife.

Dr Akbar said the children would be informed about how to visit parks and the things which they should avoid during their visit.

Lectures will be delivered for children and visitors of the zoo about fire at Margalla which has become a regular phenomenon. In addition to this, they will also be informed about the necessary steps and preparations for climbing hills.

The Centre, the official said, would educate the children of different schools in bird watching and keeping birds and other pets in their houses. They will also learn about keeping the environment clean, and faulty sewerage system, besides taking part in cleanliness drives, specially at parks and picnic spots.

Dr Akbar said a library would be established in the MCIC to provide children an opportunity to read books about history of animals. In this regard, information will also be provided to the children through computer.

Different species of fish, unique plants, birds and animals will be displayed at the Centre.

The WWF will distribute pamphlets and cards among the visitors of the zoo to provide them awareness about keeping the environment clean.
