MUZAFFARABAD, April 11: A woman was killed and 14 others were injured in different sectors of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday in Indian shelling from across the Line of Control, officials said.

They said shelling started at 9:30am in Samahni sector in district Bhimbher, Abbaspur sector in district Poonch, and Charhoi and Nakyal sectors in district Kotli.

The Indian troops used machineguns, mortars and targeted mainly the civilian populations in all these areas.

A woman, identified as Bilqis Begum, 40, was hit by a mortar shell in her house in Bandala village in Samahni sector. She died on the spot. Two more people, Yasmeen Begum, 33, and Kabir Ahmed, 20, were injured in the same village.

In Abbaspur sector, Salima Begum was injured in Nakarkot village, officials said, adding that a student, Shagufta was injured when splinters of a mortar shell that landed near her educational institution in Panjan village in Charhoi sector hit her in the back.

Ten other persons were injured in different villages of Nakyal sector. They were identified as Asif Hamid, 15; Zahir Ahmed, 32; Abdul Hamid, 60; Faiz Mohammad, 55; Robina Kausar, 16; and Irshad Ahmed, 40 (residents of Tarkundi); Abdul Khaliq, 52 (resident of Balakot); Nazia Kausar, 14; Irfan Azam, 14 (residents of Palai) and Mohammad Yousaf, 28 (resident of Datote).
