ISLAMABAD, April 3: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), the conglomerate of six religio-political parties, has accepted President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s invitation to meeting him on Saturday (April 6).

Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Amir Jamaat-i-Islami told Dawn on Wednesday that the alliance had accepted the invitation in the larger national interest without compromising its stated position.

The six MMA leaders, including Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani, chief of Jamiat-ulema-i-Pakistan, Maulana Fazlur Rahman and Maulana Samiul Haq, chiefs of their own factions of JUI, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Amir Jamaat-i-Islami, Allama Sajid Mir, chief of Jamiat Ahl-i-Hadith, and Allama Syed Sajid Ali Naqvi of Millat-i- Jaferia Pakistan, will be in the delegation which will meet the president.

Qazi said that the Majlis had unanimously decided to accept the president’s invitation as it will be an ideal opportunity to record its opinion on national and international issues. This meeting will in no way prevent it from opposing the proposed referendum.

The leadership of religio-political parties told newsmen on Tuesday that four of them had received separate invitations from the presidency, but have decided not to meet the president individually.

Qazi said that a referendum on the election of president would be unconstitutional, and will be contested in court.
