MUMBAI, Oct 29: Four more people were killed in fresh clashes between police and anti-US demonstrators in the western Indian town of Malegaon on Sunday night.

The Indian army was patrolling the streets on Malegaon, after the fresh violence in areas outside the town.

It came after police on Friday gunned down seven Muslims in the town in Maharashtra state when a crowd of more than 100 Muslim protesters turned violent during a demonstration against the US military strikes on Afghanistan.

“Eleven people have so far died in the incident. An indefinite army curfew is in place in Malegaon,” said a senior police official at the state police headquarters. He said around 135 people had so far been arrested.

“The army is largely guarding the town of Malegaon, which was affected (on) Friday. But the new cases of riots are being reported from outside the town around 10-12 kilometres away,” another police official said.

Friday’s clashes took place when police prevented the protesters from distributing leaflets asking shopkeepers and traders to boycott US goods. —AFP
