GUJRANWALA, March 24: Five people, including two women, were killed while some two dozen others suffered wounds in road accidents in and around the city here on Sunday.

A bus going to Hafizabad from Gujranwala crashed into a stationary tractor-trolley from behind near Philoki village. As a result, Ghulam Fatima and Nusrat Bibi died on the spot while around a dozen others sustained injuries. They were rushed to the civil hospital, Qila Dedar Singh, in critical condition.

Muhammad Arshad sustained serious head injuries after falling from a moving wagon on the Alipur Chattha Road. He was standing on the foot rest due to rush. He died on the way to the local DHQ Hospital.

A passer-by, Muhammad Yousef, was knocked down and killed by a speeding truck on the Sialkot by-pass chowk. He was crossing the road.

A fruit vendor was crushed to death by a speeding coaster on the GT Road near vegetable market, Kamoke. Akram of Eminabad Morr was crossing the road.

TROOPS: Mangla Corps Commander Lt-Gen Ghulam Mustafa on Sunday inspected troops and different army installations in the field area.

He was briefed by the area commander on his arrival.

Talking to troops, the corps commander said the situation on our borders though seemed calm, we should be ready to defend every inch of our country.

CAUGHT: At least eight electricity thieves were caught red-handed on Sunday by raiding teams of the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) in Wazirabad division.

The teams headed by SDOs conducted raids and found factory and domestic consumers stealing power from the main transmission line. Raiding teams issued them detection bills besides lodging FIRs with the police.
