ISLAMABAD, Nov 20: The government is set to announce amendments to the police ordinance making the relationship of the Nazim and the district police officer(DPO) more transparent.

Informed sources said the law ministry had sent the draft of the amendments to the interior ministry.

A spokesperson for the interior ministry, when contacted, said the ministry was likely to forward the text of the amended ordinance to the Chief Executive Secretariat on Wednesday.

Informed sources in the interior ministry said the basic essence of the amendments was to clarify the operational relationship between the Nazim and the district police officer. “It will detail the areas and circumstances in which the DPO is supposed to assist the District Nazim,” the sources said.

The new amendments would only define the relationship between the District Nazim and DPO and not at the lower tiers of the local government at tehsil and union levels.

The new amendments also contain certain sections defining the role of Public Safety Commissions, the sources said.
