SUKKUR, Feb 10: Different parts of upper Sindh received rain for the third consecutive day on Thursday, paralysing normal life.

Rainwater inundated main roads and bazaars as the downpour continued in Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Thul, Kandhkot, Kashmor, Ghotki, Mirpur Mathelo, Pano Aqil and other cities and towns. The weather has turned chilly due to the rain, coupled with strong winds.

In Shikarpur, rainwater accumulated in 35 houses in the Nawab Khan locality, badly damaging the houses. Inmates of the houses were shifted to safe places. Water also submerged some houses in low-lying areas of Sukkur and Ghotki, posing a danger to the houses. Similar reports were also received from areas.

It is said that the rain will benefit wheat and sugarcane crops.

The signal system of railways has been badly affected by the rain and trains are operating six to 10 hours behind their schedule. The trains are being controlled through the manual system.

According to Sukkur railway division chief controller Aziz Ahmad, Sukkur and Multan railway divisions are the worst affected.

LARKANA: The continuous rain disturbed routine life and made the weather cold in the district on Thursday.

The rain caused major faults in the electricity supply system. The drainage system remained inoperative due to suspension of power supply, leading to inundation of low-lying areas.

The Station Road, Lahori regulator road, Jiles Bazaar road, fish, meat and vegetable markets' roads, Bakrani Road, Royal Road and two subways leading to the Chandka Medical College Hospital were submerged by rainwater.

Hesco sources said due to a fault in the main underground cable supplying power to the Jinnahbagh feeder, power supply to the whole area had been disconnected.

Reports from Shahdadkot, Qambar, Ratodero, Dokri and other parts of the district said these areas were also without electricity for quite some time.

The suspension of power supply also affected hospitals and trade activities.

In Qambar, the power supply remained suspended for 24 hours and telephone lines also went out of order.

People of 30 small villages supplied electricity from the Bakrani feeder have also been affected.

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Heavy rain hit the district on Thursday. The heavy rain which started on Wednesday night continued till Thursday in Naushahro Feroze and other towns of the district.

Markets and bazaars remained closed. Transport on link roads remained thin. Due to collapse of sewerage system rain water was pooled on roads and streets of Naushahro Feroze.

Transport on the Indus Highway, Dadu-Moro and other roads was suspended while power supply and telephone system remained disrupted. Attendance in government offices also remained thin.

Following rains in the mountain area, eight feet water was flowing in the Nai Gaj. However, assistant executive engineer (Nai Gaj sub-division) Bashir Ahmed Jatoi said that there was no need for alarm as eight feet water at zero-point of the Gaj was normal. The embankments of the Gaj were safe and intact, he added.

KHAIRPUR: Two people were killed and six others injured in rain-related incidents in the district on Wednesday.

A boy, Papoo Sahito, 10, was electrocuted when he touched an electricity poll in the Mangnapota village near Hingorja town.
