MITHI, Feb 9: The Tharparkar District Council has urged the government to take notice of drought prevailing in Thar for six months and ensure supply of subsidized wheat to the calamity-stricken populace.

Moving a resolution at the council session here on Wednesday, Abdur Rahim Khoso contended that though the government had declared Thar a calamity-hit area and announced that wheat on half price would be provided to the affected people, no measures had been taken in this regard.

He said that the residents' were buying wheat flour at the rate of Rs640 per 40kg instead of the control rate of Rs480.

Supporting the resolution, another council member pointed out that a considerable number of Thari families were facing starvation due to non-supply of subsidized wheat and said that the government should take prompt relief measures. The resolution was adopted by the council.

Moving another resolution, Mr Khoso pointed out that the district nazim had obtained names of 75 deserving persons from every union council for financially assisting them through Baitul Maal but none of them had been provided any financial assistance.

The council decided to seek comments of the district nazim on the subject.

Mohammad Manthar Otho moved third resolution and alleged that buses were not taking passengers from bus stops from Vijuto to Naokot, which was causing inconvenience to the commuters of the area.

The council unanimously passed yet another resolution and urged the government to allow union council nazims to draw honorarium from the council funds.
