Killing of journalists condemned

Published February 9, 2005

KARACHI, Feb 8: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has condemned the killing of two journalists in Wana and has called it an attack on Press freedom as well as against the people's right to know.

In a statement on Tuesday, CPNE president Arif Nizami said that recent attacks on the media were an indication that journalists were being prevented from reporting objectively and to subjugate the press.

He urged the government to take measures to protect media persons. He also demanded immediate withdrawal of the case against a senior journalist of the Daily Awam, who has been booked under the Official Secrets Act, for publishing a news item based upon a letter by the National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC).

The CPNE chief termed it a direct violation of Press freedom and asked for the abolition of the Official Secrets Act.
