SRINAGAR, Nov 27: Police on Saturday shot dead four suspected guerillas here on the shores of Lake Dal. The four men were riding in an auto rickshaw near the lake, the main tourist attraction in Srinagar, when the gunbattle erupted.

"They (the suspected militants) were asked to stop by the police. Instead they opened fire which was returned, killing all four inside the auto rickshaw," a police spokesman said.

"All are believed to be militants," the spokesman said, adding security forces were checking their identities.

It was the second clash in Srinagar since troops shot dead two militants on Nov 17 near a stadium where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hours later addressed a rally.-AFP
