HYDERABAD, Nov 18: Kotri Taluka Nazim Khuda Bux Joyo has appealed to the president and the prime minister of Pakistan to order a judicial inquiry by a judge of the Sindh High Court into police firing on the faithful on Eid day.

In a communication addressed to the president with copies sent to other government leaders, including the Sindh governor and chief minister, the nazim accused the police of supporting a land grabber who was trying to take over an amenity plot in Bhittai Colony near the Gharo Goth shrine, Kotri.

He said the amenity plot had always been used for Eid prayers, funeral prayers and for games.

He alleged that a land grabber was trying to take over the amenity plot with the support of ADPO, Mazhar Nawaz Shaikh.

Mr Joyo said that on the Eid day when people gathered on the ground for offering Eid prayers, police resorted to firing in the air and arrested several persons. He said the police had registered a case against 216 persons for resisting their action.

The nazim claimed that a delegation of Kotri had earlier met with DIG Mazhar Ali Shaikh who had given clear instructions to police not to stop faithful from offering prayers on the ground.

He said despite these instructions, the police had resorted to aerial firing, registered FIR against 216 persons and arrested six innocent people.

He appealed to the president and other authorities to order judicial inquiry by a High Court judge in the matter.

STPP: The Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party has accused the Kotri police of firing on innocent people and arrest of a party leader, Akbar Memon and others.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, STPP leaders Nandlal Malhi and Saleh Junejo alleged that Akbar Memon was being tortured in lockup by the Kotri police. They said the police were supporting a land grabber who wanted to occupy Gharo Goth plot and resorted to firing on people on Eid day. They said the condition of Akbar Memon was critical and he should be immediately shifted to hospital. They demanded that the provincial police officer should take action against the Kotri police.
