THATTA, Nov 3: A many as 212 people were killed on the pretext of karo-kari and in tribal clashes and terrorist activities in September and October in Sindh, an NGO says in its report.
The report said 23 people were kidnapped during the two months and about 20 jirgas were held at various places, including the Chief Minister's House and circuit houses in upper Sindh, despite imposition of a ban on jirgas by the Sindh High Court.
Prominent among those killed included religious leaders Mufti Jamil and Maulana Nazir Ahmad. A TV actress, Afreen Baig, was also killed.
Police and law-enforcement agencies arrested 466 suspects in September and 733 in October. The arrested people included 35 women. Police also arrested 250 protesting teachers.
PROTEST: Around 300 workers of Shah Murad Sugar Mills staged a sit-in in front of its gate in Jhok on Tuesday to protest against its administration's efforts to convert their status from seasonal to contractual employees.
Earlier, they took out a procession from the main road to the factory gate, raising slogans against the factory administration.
Speaking on the occasion the SMSM Seasonal Workers' Action Committee leaders, Hamid Kumbar and others, said that they had been directed by the mill administration to collect resignations of the seasonal employees.
The administration told labour leaders that it had decided to employ the seasonal workers on Rs96 per day wages and under the new arrangement they would not be entitled to bonuses and allowances.
The workers' leaders said that on their refusal, the seasonal staff had been denied entry into the factory premises.
They said that since the establishment of the factory, the employees had been affiliated with it and they would not accept new terms of employment.
