HYDERABAD, Nov 2: District council convener Nawab Rashid Ali Khan has deplored traffic hazards in the city and said that besides police, people should also realise their responsibilities and follow traffic rules.
He told a session of the council on Monday that not only police but people also did not care about inconvenience caused due to their own conduct as they parked vehicles on main roads and started purchasing fruit at peak hours of Iftar.
He said the Station Road was one of the main roads of the city but it always remained blocked.
He regretted that whenever an anti-encroachment drive was launched unions and organizations of different trade groups started protests, leading to suspension of the drive.
The convener urged traders' unions to come forward and play their role in resolving the problem by persuading shopkeepers to remove encroachments.
He stressed the need for creating civic sense among people.
About development works, he said lining of the Wadhu Wah at a cost of Rs21 million was going on.
Referring to functioning of the Hyderabad Development Authority, he said the members should propose that the HDA should be wound up. He added that the work of the HDA should be given to some other reliable organization because its own credibility had been destroyed.
SUICIDE: An under-trial prisoner, who was mentally retarded, committed suicide in the central jail's lunatic ward on Monday night.
The prisoner was identified as Mohammad Yousuf.
When contacted, jail official Shahab Siddiqui the prisoner, facing a narcotics case, committed suicide by hanging himself with the cell's door.
He said Mr Yousuf had been transferred to the jail as lunatic patient and drug addict on July 30 from Nawabshah under orders of the district and sessions judge.
The civil judge and judicial magistrate-II examined the body and prepared the inquest report.
