Legislator demands Shaharyar to quit

ISLAMABAD, Oct 25: Pakistan's defeat in the tri-series final and the first Test against Sri Lanka, has angered a senator who has called for the cricket boss Shaharyar M. Khan to step down.

Muhammad Enver Baig, a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Sports, said on Monday that running Pakistan cricket was beyond Shaharyar and that he should make way for a professional administrator.

"Nothing is being done right in the cricket board and corruption is rampant in all areas of its operations, including appointments of staff and team selection."

Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka at Lahore in the day-night final of the tri-series and were thrashed by 201 runs in the first Test at Faisalabad on Sunday.

"The team's performance is humiliating and disgraceful and foreign coach Bob Woolmer will never get to understand the cricketing politics that is unfortunately prevalent in this country," said Enver.

Enver took on Shaharyar in meetings of the senate standing committee that began probing affairs of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the reasons for the defeat to India in March-April.

A final meeting of the standing committee is now due to take place shortly after Eid. "We will wrap up our probe this time and give recommendations which might upset the cricket officials," Enver said.
