KARACHI, June 27: Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim has appreciated concerted efforts by local ulema to chalk-out a joint strategy against sectarianism and to forge unity in their ranks.

Talking to a delegation of religious scholars representing various schools of thought here on Sunday, he said the government held ulema in high esteem and required their guidance, as well as support, because they enjoyed great respect in society.

The members of the delegation included Haji Hanif Tayyab, Senator Allama Abbas Kumaili, Hanif Blue, Mohammad Siddiq Rathore, Maulana Asad Thanvi, Syed Ali Raza Shah Naqvi and Akram Qadri.

Dr Arbab stressed that all inhabitants of the province had to make joint efforts for Sindh's welfare and progress and for the very purpose, they had to eliminate deep-rooted prejudice and the beliefs based on hatred and mistrust.

The CM emphasized the urgency of rectifying the flaws that have badly affected the system, and said such flows were effected by rampant nepotism and corruption.

"Governance is a responsibility which I do realize, but I in my individual capacity cannot make any difference and would need an absolute support from honest and committed people"

The chief minister told the delegation that law and order, and provision for clean water, health and education to people were among his top priorities and the same would be ensured across the province.

Referring to the scenario in Karachi, he said it did not allow grant of permission for a public rally or grand march because unscrupulous and anti-social elements were desperately looking for an opportunity to exploit the situation through even a trivial chance.

Dr Arbab assured the delegation that all possible financial support would be extended to religious schools functioning in the province.

The delegation assured the CM of their full support in his efforts towards improving law and order situation and restoring peace to help boost economic activity in the province.

They also suggested that peace committees be reactivated, steps be taken to improve coordination between the government and religious scholars and an equitable distribution of zakat funds be ensured. -APP
