PESHAWAR, June 5: The Central Board of Revenue has asked the Peshawar customs authorities to hold an inquiry into the alleged corruption of officials deputed at the Torkham checkpoint, it is learnt on Friday.

The case came to light when the political administration arrested last week two clearing agents who had got from the officials concerned stamps on the invoices about seven oil-tankers but were entering Afghanistan without any vehicle.

Accused Asadullah and Sharfuddin had got the invoices of 270,000 litre patrol cleared from the customs officials. They had also got the exit stamp from the political authorities.

Sources said the CBR on Wednesday directed the customs authorities to complete the inquiry against the Torkham customs officials by June 9 as to how they had cleared the export documents without physical examination of the oil-tankers.

The same day, sources said, customs collector Liaquat Ali visited Torkham and checked the official record at the customs checkpoint and recorded statements of officials.
