ISLAMABAD, May 18: President Gen Pervez Musharraf will hold an important foreign policy review meeting here at the Foreign Office later this week, it is learnt. This will be President Musharraf's third meeting at the Foreign Office in the last three months.

The meeting planned for Friday acquires special significance in the backdrop of a changed political scenario in India. The stunning victory of the Congress party and its implications on Pakistan-India relations, particularly in the context of the current peace process, is likely to dominate the discourse, sources told Dawn on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali will also attend the meeting at which according to knowledgeable sources "very important issues" will be taken up. On the occasion foreign secretary Riaz Khokhar will make a presentation on the Foreign Office view on the post election scenario in India, sources said. Apparently the Foreign Office has already conducted an in-house assessment of the dramatic political changes across the border.

Earlier in the month an inter-ministerial meeting was held under the chairmanship of President Musharraf and Prime Minister Jamali to take stock of the current regional situation and the pace of the peace process with India.

President Musharraf's planned visit to the Foreign Office is seen as part of his established practice of maintaining close contact with the country's key foreign policy-making institution.

In an effort to promote a team spirit with Foreign Office professionals the president last month hosted an evening at the Army House in Rawalpindi for all Foreign Service officers.

According to various Foreign Ministry sources these meetings have somewhat boosted the morale of career diplomats who in the past have felt marginalized from the foreign policy of Pakistan.
