HYDERABAD, Feb 14: An eminent psychiatrist of the country, Professor Syed Haroon Ahmed, has said that there has been a corresponding increase in the cases of mental stress due to people's struggle for luxuries.

He said this while speaking at a seminar on mental stress organized by the faculty of Medicines, Allied Sciences and Postgraduate Studies, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, here on Saturday.

Dr Haroon explained in detail the causes of mental stress.

The LUMHS vice-chancellor, Professor Jan Mohammad Memon, in his presidential address said the university had introduced diploma and degree courses in psychiatry to eliminate an acute shortage of psychiatrists in Sindh.

He assured that the university would make all out efforts for the development of psychiatry.

He paid tributes to Professor Syed Haroon Ahmed, Dr Shahid Rasheed and Dr Naeem Siddiqui for their services in this specialised field.

The dean, faculty of medicines and allied sciences, Professor Allah Bachayo Memon spoke at length on the symptoms of mental diseases.

Dr Shahid Rasheed in his speech spoke on the subject of "anger" and its harmful affects.

Dr Naeem Siddiqui spoke on the treatment of depression and other mental diseases which were the out come of depression.

Dr Jameel Ahmed and Dr Mohanlal also spoke on the occasion.

HEALTH CENTRE: The district police officer A. D. Khwaja has said that it is the duty of the department to control crime and added that it was equally necessary that welfare programmes were initiated for the welfare of police officials.

He was inaugurating maternal and childcare health centre in the police hospital on Friday.

A large number of police officers, members of the public safety commission and elite of the town attended the function.

He said the vaccination of police personnel against Hepatitis-B and C had been completed.

He paid compliment to the MS of the hospital, Dr Ziauddin and his team for their commitment and outstanding services.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ziauddin said a small dispensary was established at the police headquarters in 1986 which has now become a full-fledged hospital.

He said all facilities including X-Ray, Ultra Sound, micro laboratory, diabetic centre, free ambulance service and physiotherapy centre facilities were available in the hospital.

SAU: Sindh governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has appointed professor (Dr) Shafi Mohammad Nizamani of plant protection department, Sindh agriculture university, Tando Jam as dean, faculty of crop protection for next three years on account of his high academic qualifications and research work.

Professor Nizamani has replaced former dean professor Mohammad Hanif Arain who has retired from service.
