PESHAWAR, Feb 14: Some of the senior police officials are violating rules, using impounded vehicles on superdari without obtaining court permission, officials said here on Saturday.

The government had placed a ban on the use of impounded vehicles on superdari nearly three years ago, sources said.

Police officials are required by law to park impounded vehicles at police stations concerned until the court decides about the vehicle's fate, sources said.

Sources said following the government's instructions in this regard, the police had called in impounded vehicles, which it had handed over on superdari, from selected people, exempting officials of the judiciary, who, too, were benefiting from this practice.

Sources said that police officials were again breaching rules, keeping vehicles in good condition for their personal use, adding some of them even "give" these impounded vehicles to their family members.

A good number of senior officials violate rules by keeping more than two impounded vehicles at their residences, sources added.

Senior officials preferred using various models of Toyota or Honda impounded in their respective limits, they said.

According to rules, the police department paid for fuel for official cars but these officers switch number plates of official vehicles with those vehicles under their custody, thereby reaping monetary benefits in this regard, sources maintained.

Some police officials simply switched number plates while others possessed two vehicles with same number plates, sources alleged.

Sources said that while police officials used expensive models of cars with impunity, other government officials were officially barred from using such impounded vehicles.
