GUJRANWALA, Feb 7: The government will shortly announce the new transport policy aiming at facilitating commuters through modern addas and training institutes for drivers.

This was stated by Punjab Transport Minister Chaudhry Shamshad Ahmad Khan while he was speaking at a high-level meeting here on Saturday. DCO Fazeel Asghar and other senior officers also attended the meeting.

The minister said all D-type stands would be replaced by new ones spreading over at least three kanals to provide modern facilities to commuters. Training institutes for drivers would also be established by the private sector following an approval of the provincial government, he added.

He said a board comprising the transport secretary, DSP (traffic) and representative of the Punjab government, would be constituted for issuing fitness certificates.

The minister said 100 franchized buses would be run between Kamoki and Wazirabad, adding 15 of those were already being run on a trial.
