SUKKUR, Jan 3: More than 40 suspects, with a wanted outlaw, Suhrab Nandvani, were arrested in Deh Jamal area near Ghouspur, Jacobabad district on Friday.
The arrests were made following an attack of armed bandits on a police-led convoy of vehicles in the area on Thursday in which one person was killed and another injured.
A heavy contingent of police raided Deh Jamal, cordoned off more than 70 villages and conducted house-to-house search.
Nandvani with his gang members opened fire at the police which was returned as a result he was injured and arrested.
The police either bulldozed or burnt 35 houses supposed to be hideouts of the criminals, arrested more than 40 suspects and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession, including Kalashnikovs, guns and bullets.
The names of the arrested persons could not be immediately known as the Jacobabad DPO said that verification of their character was under way.
The DPO told journalists that the criminals, operating on the Indus Highway between Ghouspur and Karampur, often took asylum in Deh Jamal.
BANDITS ESCAPE: The police arrested 10 villagers suspected of providing shelter to bandits in the Kutcha area of Bagarji on Friday night after a group of bandits escaped by breaking through police cordon.
The police of Sukkur, Shikarpur, Larkana, Khairpur and Jacobabad districts had cordoned the area to recover four hostages, kidnapped last week from Naudero area.
An encounter between the police and bandits also took place after which the criminals escaped by breaking the cordon.
Later, police conducted raids on different villages and arrested 10 persons on the charge of providing shelter to the bandits.
Meanwhile, the Khairpur police recovered two of the hostages, Imtiaz and Rajesh, on Thursday.
Naveed Bhutto, Altaf Bhutto, Nadeem Mangnejo and Jibran Mangnejo are still in the captivity of the bandits.
Meanwhile, armed bandits, after blocking the National Highway, looted passengers of two buses, coming from Quetta, and three wagons in Lakhi Ghulam Shah area on Saturday.
The passengers were deprived of cash, ornaments, and other valuables.
