LAHORE, Jan 1: Two alleged robbers and a policeman were killed while two other sustained injuries in an encounter on Mohni Road in the Lower Mall police limits on Thursday.

A team of Shalamar police on identification of two alleged robbers Riaz alias Raju and Asif Ali raided a hideout in the locality. The inmates opened fire on the squad which was retaliated, the police claimed.

They said Sub-Inspector Hasnat Ahmad and constables Liaquat Ali and Adnan Baig, and Riaz and Asif suffered injuries. The injured men were rushed to a nearby hospital where SI Hasnat and the two alleged robbers died soon after arrival. The two constables were stated to be in critical condition.

The house was intruded by the policemen, later, and three alleged robbers, Faiz Sultan, Tufail and Fayaz, were arrested. However, sources say the police killed the two men in their custody after injuries to three policemen.

Faiz had escaped last week after robbing a jewellery shop in Shalamar leaving behind his rickshaw. He confessed to robbing Rs800,000 from another jewellery shop in Garhi Shahu two weeks ago while his accomplices confessed to having committed 14 crimes against property.

SUICIDE: A woman allegedly committed suicide over family disputes in Manawan on Thursday. Quoting family, the police said Azra, 29, a mother of two, was not enjoying a happy marriage with Jamil Ahmad.

The couple used to quarrel on trivial issue. They exchanged harsh words on Thursday before the woman detained herself in her room and allegedly took poison. She was taken to hospital where she died. Her body was handed over to the family without autopsy.

DIED: A man found unconscious in Naulakha on Wednesday, died in the Mayo Hospital on Thursday.Police claimed that Younus, 40, was poisoned by swindlers as his pockets had been emptied. The body was removed to the city mortuary for autopsy.

SUSPENDED: Ghaziabad police station SHO was suspended from service on Thursday on corruption charges. The action was taken on the directions of city police chief on receiving complaints against SHO Inspector Muhammad Riaz. An inquiry found the SHO patronizing a gambling den besides receiving Rs20,000 and a cell phone as bribe.
