LAHORE, May 31: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Friday drew government’s attention to the plight of those brought back from Afghanistan and detained at hospitals in Pakistan.

The plea is based on the report of a fact-finding team which met some of the detainees at the Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. Most of them were imprisoned at Shibergan jail in Afghanistan where condition were appalling. These prisoners were stuffed in containers when transported from one place to another; many of them died due to suffocation and survivors were incapacitated.

Most of those at the hospital were malnourished and suffering from respiratory problems, TB, diarrhoea, allergies, itching and many other problems. Torture, according to them, during the imprisonment was common.

A majority of those went to fight along side Taliban belonged to the interior Punjab and were inspired by their teachers at seminaries, the report said.
