HYDERABAD, April 14: Post-graduate doctors of the Liaquat Medical University Hospital, who are doing diploma courses, abstained from work in the ward and out-patient department on Thursday to hold a demonstration outside the press club to protest against non-payment of stipend.

Addressing the protesters, Dr Inayat Ali Shah said that recently the Sindh governor as well as the chief minister had announced that all doctors doing their post-graduation would be paid monthly stipend; however, he regretted, only those doctors who were doing degree courses were receiving the stipend, while those doing post-graduation diploma were not paid the same.

Terming it great injustice, he said that 70 per cent of the work in the university hospital was done by post-graduate doctors, majority of whom were doing diploma courses.

Post-graduate doctors were working round the clock and, sometimes, even for 48 hours at a time, he added.

Dr Chaudhry Mohammad Ahmed, Dr Saima, Dr Murad Qureshi and others claimed that in all the hospitals of the country, doctors doing their post-graduation were paid stipend, but doctors of the interior Sindh were meted out step-motherly treatment.

They warned that if they were not paid the stipend, they would boycott their duties and resort to hunger strike.

SPSC: Controller of examinations, Sindh Public Service Commission, Hyderabad, here on Wednesday, announced the names of the candidates interviewed for the posts of Urdu lecturers (male and female) in the education and literacy department, Government of Sindh.

The commission found 19 male and 21 female candidates suitable and recommended their names for appointment.

CIVIL SERVANTS: A group of 22 under-training officers from the Civil Service Academy Lahore visited the Sindh University on Thursday and met with vice-chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui.

The vice-chancellor told them that during the last four academic years, the ratio of men and women students tremendously increased.

He said the university had increased its budget for the purchase of library books, laboratory equipments and chemicals by 100 per cent.

He said the government was giving a top priority to quality education and earmarked huge funds for MPhil and PhD degrees.

He said the higher education commission had allocated funds to the tune of Rs500 million for the university development projects.

He said work on these projects was proceeding at a hectic pace.

Led by group leader Saifullah Dogar, the officers visited the Institutes of Information Technology and Sindhology.

SYNDICATE ELECTIONS: The Registrar of the University of Sindh, Dr Saeed Soomro, announced the result of election of the university teachers’ constituency.

According to the notification, Prof Dr Lutfullah Mangi, Agha Riaz Hassan, Mehmoodul Hassan Mughal and Mohib Leghari had been elected from the category of professors, associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers, respectively.

SPSC: The controller of examinations of the Sindh Public Service Commission on Wednesday announced result of pre-interview written test conducted by the commission on March 29, 2005 for recruitment on posts of lecturers economics and lecturers political science in education and literacy department.
