KARACHI, March 10: Twenty milk sellers were picked up on Thursday as the city government resumed its campaign against profiteers following failure of several rounds of talks with dairy farmers, wholesalers and retailers on bringing down the milk prices.

City Nazim Niamatullah Khan on Wednesday gave the go-ahead to the campaign under Section 144 after milk sellers and dairy farmers refused follow the official rates. Milk is selling at Rs25-28 per litre as against the official rate of Rs22 per litre.

According to city government sources, 13 milk sellers were arrested in Bin Qasim area, five in Orangi and two in Liaquatabad for overcharging.

Representatives of dairy farmers said on Thursday that they intended to call on Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad to discuss the issue and find out an amicable solution. They said the matter of action against milk sellers would also be taken up.

They feared an adverse effect on market if, due to the action, retailers refused to lifting milk from the farmers. This might also cause trouble to consumers in getting a smooth supply, they added.
