BAHAWALPUR, March 7: People from all walks of life, including politicians, farmers, traders and artistes, donated generously for tsunami-hit people at a musical show organized by the Radio Pakistan , Bahawalpur, at the broadcasting house here on Sunday night.
The biggest donation of Rs100,000 on behalf of the district government was announced by District Nazim Tariq Cheema, who was the chief guest at the show. The donors included adviser to the Punjab chief minister Malik Khalid Mahmood Warrren, Quaid-i-Azam Medical College Principal Prof Dr Khursheed Ahmed Qureshi, Pakistan Medical Association president Prof Dr Qasim Kichi,
A number of NGO office-bearers and radio artistes also announced donations on the occasion. Station director Dr Nasrullah Khan Nasir thanked all the donors. During the show, which continued for over five hours, noted singer Asad Amant Ali and Humaira Channa thrilled the audience for over two hours.
A number of folk artistes and singers, including Jamel Parwana, Nasar Mastana, Hasena Khanum, Shirin Kanwal, Shazia Talib and Krishan Lal also amused the audience.
FESTIVAL: A women's festival was organized here on Monday by an NGO in connection with the International Women Day. On the occasion, speakers highlighted the problems being faced by women folk and called upon the government and human rights bodies to take steps to protect women from exploitation and grant them their due rights.
COMPLAINTS: A number of complaints against police were brought to the notice of DPO Arif Nawaz, who held an open kutchery at 16-BC village in Yazman tehsil. The DPO, on the complaint of one Muhammad Azam of chak 42-DB, directed the police to register a case against the accused who allegedly took away a trawler and arrest them within 10 days.
Another complainant, Allah Bachaya of Derawar Fort, said that police did not arrest the accused who abducted his sister, while Ms Kundan Mai of chak No 63-DB accused the police of showing negligence in arresting the culprits who were allegedly involved in her daughter's abduction.
The DPO directed the police to arrest the accused within one week.Mr Nawaz assured people that the police would protect their life and property. He asked people to cooperate with police to curb crime.
