QUETTA, Feb 28: The police chief of Balochistan, Chaudhry Yaqoob, said here on Monday that recording of voices of the accused in the Sui lady doctor assault case had been sent to the victim because she had stated that she could pinpoint the criminal if she heard his voice.

The recordings include the voice of Captain Hammad of the Defence Services Group (DSG), the Inspector General of Police said. He said that police had expanded the scope of its investigation after conducting an identity parade in which the lady doctor could not identify Captain Hammad or other DSG personnel.

He said that Balochistan police had conducted the identity parade in Hub on Sunday and the lady doctor, her husband and other relatives had travelled to Hub.

The lady doctor failed to identify any of the accused during the identity parade, Chaudhry Yaqoob said, adding that Captain Hammad and 10 other accused who had been detained by police were brought to Hub for the parade held under the supervision of a judicial magistrate. District Police Officer (DPO) Nasirabad, Ghulam Mohammad Dogar, was also present on the occasion.

He said he had always made it clear that police would make all possible efforts to trace the accused involved in the rape case and would not spare anyone because of his status and rank.

He said that police had detained DSG personnel whose names had been mentioned in the case. Even some PLL official and doctors were arrested who had been accused of having tried to change the nature of the case.

He said that despite having no evidence of the involvement of Captain Hammad, other DSG personnel and PPL employees in the case, police sent samples of their blood for DNA tests on the directives of President Pervez Musharraf.

He said that the DNA report was negative, disproving their involvement in the criminal assault. Despite this, he added, police included all of them in the identity parade to provide an opportunity to the victim to identify the accused. However, he said that although the lady doctor could not recognize any of the accused, police would not give up and continue its efforts to find the real culprits. "We have expanded the circle of investigation and more suspects would be interrogated," Chaudhry Yaqoob said.

"We wanted to help the lady doctor in getting justice," he said. The police chief said that the DPO Nasirabad had visited Sui in connection with the investigation and also requested the nazim of Dera Bugti to help police in finding evidence against the accused. However, he said, the nazim did not contact police in this connection.

Replying to a question, he said that the lady doctor had not named Captain Hammad or anyone else in her FIR. He also denied reports that the Nasirabad police had in any manner threatened the lady doctor.

MARRI CAMP: Chaudhry Yaqoob also said that police continued on Monday its house-to-house search operation in the Marri camp area in the suburbs of Quetta. "The operation will continue for some more days and suspect places and houses in the area called Marri camp will be searched," he told newsmen.
