PESHAWAR, Feb 24: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah on Thursday asked writers and journalists to discharge their responsibilities with dedication to help the government ensure good governance and reform society.

Talking to journalists at the Swat Press club following a visit to the city, the governor said the government considered the press as its eyes and ears, adding that their reports helped a lot in framing policies.

In many cases, he said, the government addressed the problems after they were highlighted in the press. However, the governor was concerned about 'unnecessary' reporting in certain matters. He said such reports conveyed to the outside world a wrong impression about the province.

He said the law and order situation in the province was exemplary but the situation was portrayed otherwise. "We need to strengthen unity in our ranks and promote cohesion amongst the masses to wash away all such negative perceptions," he emphasized.

Mr Shah said the government was focusing on promotion of education. He said ignorance and poverty could be avoided by developing an educated human resource. He said a number of projects were being executed to ensure progress and prosperity, but he added that these projects would prove beneficial if "we have sufficient educated workforce". -PPI
