FAISALABAD, Nov 29: The district council has approved amid uproar a resolution urging President General Pervez Musharraf not to quit as army chief.
During a session held here on Monday with Convener Raza Nasarullah Ghuman in the chair, a woman member when started reading the resolution in favour of the uniform, opposition councillors stood up and started raising a hue and cry.
They said that the subject of the resolution did not fall under the purview of the district council as per the Punjab Local Government Ordinance 2001. A group of lady councillors carrying a banner chanted slogans against the government and the uniform. Women councillors of the ruling group also hanged a banner in favour of the uniform.
Pandemonium was the hallmark of the session as the councillors refused to listen to the convener. After noisy speeches, the convener allowed the councillor to present the resolution before the house which approved it with an overwhelming majority.
District Nazim Zahid Nazir in his concluding speech thanked the members for according approval to the resolution. The Nazim also presented a five-year education plan for discussion.
He asked the members to give their proposals in this regard so that it could be finalized. The convener adjourned the house until Tuesday (today) for discussing other agenda items.
DELAY RESENTED: Inordinate delay in implementing the orders of the president, the prime minister, the governor and the chief minister with regard to setting up of a bench of the Lahore High Court in Faisalabad has been resented.
At a meeting presided over by DBA president Muhammad Hussain here on Monday, it was said that country's top brass had accepted the longstanding demand of lawyers, traders and politicians of the region. But the orders had been sent to the cold storage due to the reasons best known to the high-ups, it noted.
The meeting said if the government failed to take positive steps in this regard, the lawyers community would launch a protest movement. The DBA unanimously approved a resolution asking the president and the prime minister to direct the officials concerned for the instantaneous implementation of the orders.
