FAISALABAD, Nov 26: The district council formally approved the schedule and rates of taxes and fees on various trades and professions amid uproar here on Friday.

During a session presided over by convener Raza Nasarullah Ghuman, scores of councillors of opposition group raised objections on the ruling group.

They claimed the district government had allocated development funds in selected areas, awarded contracts to favourites and imposed taxes on people in lust for kick backs.

The DO (excise and taxation) presented the rates and schedule of taxes. Opposition councillors opined that the district government had neither provided the mandatory chance to members for raising objections on the schedule of taxes nor put the matter before the house for debate.

After a heated debate, the house approved the schedule of taxes and permitted the authorities concerned for their recovery. Those who spoke on the occasion included Advocate Dilbar Hameed, Malik Ashfaq, Sharafat Ali Khan and Mrs Shabnam. The convener adjourned the session for Monday.
