MIRPURKHAS, Oct 15: The Trading Corporation of Pakistan has started purchase of cotton bales in Sanghar and Mirpurkhas districts. The government had fixed the rate of cotton at Rs925 per 40 kilogram but the factories were offering Rs700 per maund.
The growers demanded that the government should ensure implementation of its decision. There are reports that moisture has increased in cotton following recent rains in Sindh.
The in-charge of the TCP centre, Nabi Bux Leghari, said the TCP had started purchase of cotton bales from cotton factories in Sanghar and Mirpurkhas and so far 700 bales had been purchased at Rs2,314 per bale.
He said about 32 factories had contacted the TCP centre in Mirpurkhas, adding that 32 cotton ginning factories belonged to Mirpurkhas, Tando Adam and Khipro. He said the TCP was purchasing grade-3 cotton and would continue till March 2005.
DCO: DCO Siddique Memon has directed officials of the On-Farm Water Management to ensure lining of watercourses under the programme announced by the president. He was presiding over a meeting on Thursday to review the lining of watercourses in the district.
The meeting was attended by the director of the Nara canal area water board Ghulam Hussain Laghari, chief executive engineers of Mithrao, Jamrao and Thar divisions, EDO revenue Mushtaque Shaikh, EDO community development Siddique Memon, district officer On-Farm Water Management and Wali Mohammad Bughio.
The DO said there were 3,000 watercourses in the district and 1,600 of them were yet to be lined. For the completion of the work, he said, associations would be formed on each watercourse and elected office-bearers would complete the work under their supervision.
He said after lining of 100 per cent watercourses in the district about 20 per cent waste of water would be saved. The DCO directed officers to complete the work within stipulated time.
