PESHAWAR, Oct 7: Peshawar University Vice Chancellor Mumtaz Gul on Thursday exhorted the students to focus on their studies, emphasizing that the future of the country hinged on their performance.

"Students are the asset of any nation. They need to pay more attention to their studies and should also take part in healthy physical activities so that they can prepare the country for the challenges of tomorrow," said Mr Gul, while addressing the 49th prize distribution ceremony of the University Model School here.

Referring to the Rs110 million loss to the university which, according to him, was being caused by five schools located on the campus, Mr Gul stressed the need for grants from the provincial and federal governments. Yet, he said, no effort would be spared to fulfil the requirements of schools and announced Rs500,000 to upgrade the library and laboratory of the university model school.

The vice-chancellor said that without the support of parents the students would suffer. School Principal Arjumand Nazir said that despite lack of facilities in the library and laboratories, the students had grabbed 11 positions out of the top 20 in the secondary school certificate examination 2003-04.

An exhibition of art and craft was held on the occasion. Students presented a tableau and national songs. The Peshawar University vice-chancellor gave away prizes to the distinguished students.
