HYDERABAD, Oct 3: About 3,900 candidates appeared in the test for admission to 16 technological courses at the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, on Sunday.

The test was held at the Public School, Hyderabad, in two shifts. A total of 4,000 candidates had applied for admission but forms of 100 candidates were rejected for different reasons.

Vice Chancellor Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajput and members of the vigilance committee visited the examination centre and expressed satisfaction over arrangements made for the test.

Talking to journalists, Dr Rajput said the result of the test would be made public on Oct 5 and merit list would be displayed at the university notice board on Oct 8. He said interviews of successful candidates would be held on district basis from Oct 11 to 15.

He observed that the standard of education at the university had improved following introduction of the admission test in 1998. He claimed that demand for MUET graduates had increased since the university had got ISO-9000 certification.

SU ADMISSIONS: The University of Sindh has announced that the last date for submitting admission forms for bachelor's and master's degree programs for the session of 2005 is Oct 15.

HESCO: The Hyderabad Electric Supply Company will launch a Rs22 million rehabilitation programme of its power distribution network in the coastal belt where foundations of transmission lines' poles have deteriorated due to salt deposits.

This was stated by Hesco chief executive Syed Adeelul Hassan Rizvi while talking to journalists at his office on Saturday. He said dust had gathered over cables which created faults and led to power disruptions.

He said Wapda had approved the maintenance programme, which would be executed after Eidul Fitr. Mr Rizvi said there was no alternate power supply system so the existing one would have to be rehabilitated in areas like Thatta, Sujawal, Ladion and Kotri.
